Commissioned by Erika and Willi Fehlbaum – the founders of the Vitra company – Burckhardt planned and completed the «Im Freuler» residential development near the furniture manufacturer’s headquarters in Muttenz (BL) in 1986. After completion, the clients proposed to their architects that they should also take over the letting of the apartments. The Fehlbaums’ idea fell on fertile ground. What began as an experiment with the «Freuler Development» led to the permanent expansion of the portfolio to include a new business area: «Burckhardt Immobilien AG» was entered in the commercial register in 1989. Today, the subsidiary offers real estate management, construction management, conversions, and renovation, as well as property rental and sales services in northwestern Switzerland and beyond.

Through decades of experience, Burckhardt Immobilien has acquired extensive expertise in the conversion and renovation of residential buildings. One particular, fairly rare specialization is the renovation of properties while they are being lived in. The portfolio also comprises value-enhancing measures such as sophisticated, premium-quality refurbishments. Another important area is the energy-efficient upgrading of existing buildings in line with Minergie standards. Against the backdrop of climate change and rising energy prices, it is extremely pertinent both to the value retention of properties and to society as a whole to optimize the energy efficiency of existing building stock.

The service portfolio now also includes the commercial and legal management of projects. With this, Burckhardt Immobilien offers its clients comprehensive support over the entire life cycle of a property. By combining architectural know-how and real estate management expertise, the subsidiary creates synergies that benefit both private and institutional clients.
