The decade began with Burckhardt’s 70th anniversary and the question of a successor to long-serving CEO Samuel Schultze. Burckhardt also took a major step forward in project development in 2014 with respect to entrepreneurial risk: At Spitzenrain in Aesch (Baselland), the company bought its own plot of land for the first time and built a residential development on it.

Burckhardt Belongs to Burckhardt
With the departure of founder Martin H. Burckhardt and his closest colleague Guido Doppler in the early 1990s, an era came to an end.
In 1993, the then-partner Peter Epting introduced the farsighted shareholders’ agreement, which further strengthened Burckhardt’s independence and secured it for the future. The contract stipulated that only active employees could acquire shares, which is still the case today: Burckhardt belongs to Burckhardt.

In the same year, Burckhardt Immobilien AG was founded, specializing in real estate management, conversions, and renovation. This, at the time, unusual step for an architectural office resulted from a commission by Erika and Willi Fehlbaum – the founders of the Vitra company.

At the same time, the 1970s also marked the most devastating turn of events in the company’s history: The two oil price crises of 1973 and 1979 hit Burckhardt hard. Many projects were halted or even cancelled before they could be started.
